Wanduj as a Source of Sickness

In addition to its attractive qualities, huanduj is also a “sasi” (ritually avoided or taboo) substance. Around the year 2000 Kichwa preachers circulated the story of a person who had died, gone to heaven, and come back to life. While in heaven God had told him that it was a sasi to touch the plant. Estefania Aguinda’s perspective is exemplary of this ritual avoidance. When huanduj grows spontaneously in her chagra she cuts it down with a machete and then uses a stick to remove the cuttings to a chinda or brush pile. If she smells huanduj she spits to clear the taste. While many people use huanduj as a poulstice whe does not do so claiming that instead of taking away sickness it “calls sickness “. This act of calling that is attributed to the plant is a charge that is often made of traditional healers who are said to bewitch their patients under the guise of healing.
